Western
Red Cedar Characteristics
Western Red Cedar “Thuja Plicata” is the beautiful,
durable wood of the Pacific Northwest. Long known throughout
its range as a virtually pest free and extremely durable
building material, it has been used by thousands for years
by the indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest and Canada.
Western Red Cedar is gaining international recognition
as the “worry free” fencing material, because
it contains a naturally occurring substance called Tannin.
This natural preservative gives the wood its characteristic
spicy smell and helps to protect against insects and decay.
The lavish color, grain and texture of Western Red Cedar
provide a striking natural look that enhances any landscape.

Maintenance
As with any exterior wood product, weather and age
will slowly take their toll. Western Red Cedar can be left
natural and will age to a rich silver color. It takes clear
oils, stains or paint equally well. Whatever you choose to
enhance your boards, occasional maintenance will keep your
Western Red Cedar fence looking great for years. Please
see your home center expert for paint and stain
options and instructions.
